Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) is a process for the flexible production of complex sheet metal components in small batches. The sheet is fixed in a universal blankholder. To form a component, a CNC controlled universal forming tool follows the contour lines of the required geometry.

The main advantage of this technology is the fast realization from the CAD model to the finished part. This allows a fast adaptation to process modifications as well as varying tasks and geometries. The process is suitable for the production of prototypes and small batches, e.g. in the areas automotive, aerospace, architecture and medicine.

Our Expertise

Combining the processes ISF and stretch forming, allows us to produce a broad range of components in a significantly reduced process time and with enhanced geometrical accuracy compared to pure ISF.

Within several research projects, a multi-functional sheet metal processing center was developed. On this machine, the entire process chain of sheet metal forming including the production of forming tools, the forming itself, and subsequent trimming and flanging operations can be performed.

Research Topics and Projects

We focus on the development of improved forming strategies and investigate the material behavior and springback during forming. Numerical simulation tools are tested for a better prediction of the process. The aim is to achieve the required geometrical accuracy and at the same time a good surface quality with least possible planning effort. 

Within the Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries“ the possibilities of a local heat treatment during ISF are investigated. Using an integrated laser optics, the sheet is heated in the area of the forming zone. This enables to form high strength materials and materials that can hardly be formed at room temperature.


We offer the production of prototypes or customized components as single copy or in small batches. Furthermore, we perform feasibility studies to develop new applications with our industrial partners.
