Materials Testing

The materials testing group is responsible for the determination of material properties and process boundary values, as well as their preparation for the use in process simulation and material modelling tools. The properties can be determined either directly from the measured data or by a subsequent inverse modelling. A particular focus of the group is the process related characterization of microstructure evolution.

The Materials Modelling groups deal with microstructure evolution during forming processes and in corresponding process chains. The groups utilize macroscopic as well as multi-scale modelling techniques to predict grain size, texture and precipitation.
The group Materials Modelling I in addition is concerned with modelling phenomena occurring at different types of interfaces.
The group Materials Modelling II in addition is concerned with digitization in metal forming.

The group for flat and long products deals with all questions concerning the production of semi-finished products. An emphasis lies on rolling processes such as flat rolling, roll bonding and caliber rolling. For those processes fast online models, new tool concepts and modelling approaches are developed. Thus, new process controls and geometries of the semi-finished products as well as deeper process knowledge become accessible. more...

Strip Casting

The bulk metal forming group studies, by means of processes as e.g. forging and ring rolling, numerous different research topics such as increasing the geometry limits and process optimization. Furthermore, models representing bulk metal forming processes are developed, which can be used for process design, prediction and improvement of workpiece properties as well as training courses.

The Sheet Metal Forming group examines conventional sheet metal forming processes, such as deep drawing and bending, next to innovative processes: the combination of stretch forming and Incremental Sheet Forming is suitable for the economic production of small series. In addition, the Finite Element method is applied to design and optimize sheet metal forming processes numerically.
